In 1723, this street was already called and spelled "rue de Furstemberg", named after Cardinal Guillaume-Egon de Fürstenberg (1629-1704), appointed abbot of Saint-Germain-des-Prés in 1697, and the square square, which is not then part of the street, is called "cour des Écuries".
